Urban Debate Works Evidence Center: The one-stop source for rigorous scientific evidence on the effectiveness of Urban Debate Leagues

An emerging body of independent rigorous scientific research is demonstrating that Urban Debate Leagues (UDLs) improve educational and social outcomes.

Educators, policy makers, and the public can turn to the Urban Debate Works Evidence Center as a central and trustworthy source for evidence about UDLs. Administered by the National Association for Urban Debate Leagues (NAUDL), the Evidence Center holds up methodological rigor and publication in peer-reviewed journals as the benchmarks for quality. The Evidence Center aims to gather in one location and disseminate quality evidence regarding the UDL approach.

Practitioners and policy makers face a challenge to identify which interventions improve outcomes for students in low performing urban public schools. Focusing on UDLs, this Evidence Center will provide and promote the use of high-quality information in order to improve educational and investor decision-making.

New research from Dr. Briana Mezuk of the Virginia Commonwealth University, conducted in conjunction with the University of Michigan, the Consortium on Chicago School Research, and the Chicago Public Schools examined data from urban debate participants in Chicago Public Schools, and found significant benefits of participation in such metrics as graduation rates, grade point average (GPA), college and career readiness, and secondary literacy. This is the first of several forthcoming papers, which will advance the evidence base establishing the effectiveness of the Urban Debate League approach.
