Debaters receive national recognition - University News

Fox Sports and Farmer's Insurance recently recognized three members of UMKC's debate team in an "Americans in Focus" clip. Debaters Dashawnta Brunson, Sean Easterwood and Desmond Mason were featured in the clip, along with their coach, Professor Gabe Cook. Easterwood said being recognized by Fox Sports was "cool" because it gave them exposure in different areas. Brunson added that it was a good experience because they were able to talk to successful members of the Urban Debate League.

Debaters win qualifier - The Towerlight

Towson's debate team is continuing to make waves in the debate community with their unyielding, at times controversial arguments. On Sunday, Brotherhood: Leaders of a Beautiful Struggle president Adam Jackson and Deverick Murray, Black Student Union president, won an unprecedented six out of eight competitions at a district qualifier at University of Mary Washington.

Tufts senior coaches Boston high school students in debate - Tufts Daily

While some students prefer to stay on campus during the cold winter months, limiting their community service to holding doors open for their frost-bitten peers, senior Amanda Hahnel chooses to brave the weather and make the trek into Boston to volunteer. Since her sophomore year at Tufts, Hahnel has been working with students in the Boston Debate League (BDL) for public high school students as both a coach and debate judge.

Julio Lanzo and Tyrell Carter are champions of their event. They have to bring their best game to every meet if they want to successfully defend their title and make it to the national championships, as they did last year.

But Lanzo and Carter don't throw footballs, swing baseball bats, or kick soccer balls. They win with words.

Beyond Debate: In-house attorney supports program to help urban teens build skills through debate. - Inside Counsel

Pro bono service is generally interpreted to mean volunteer work providing legal services to the poor. But many in-house attorneys also help their communities in other ways—serving on boards of non-profit institutions and raising money for such groups.

Bobbie Gregg, chief compliance officer of Aon, for example, serves on the governing board of the Chicago Debate Commission. The commission supports a program that involves Chicago public high school and middle school students in debate as a way to motivate them to stay in school and help them develop skills that will allow them to pursue higher education. An arm of the National Association of Urban Debate Leagues (NAUDL), the Chicago Debate Commission supports two full-time staff members who work with high school and middle school coaches, sponsors policy debate tournaments and funds scholarships to debate camps.

Norma Adams-Wade: Kwanzaafest to feature debaters - Dallas Morning News

Young local debaters inspired by the movie The Great Debaters will bring new excitement to Kwanzaafest at Fair Park this weekend, as will entertainers including actor Jamie Foxx.

The free Kwanzaafest in early December precedes the actual seven-day Kwanzaa cultural celebration that begins the day after Christmas.
