The National Association for Urban Debate Leagues
Since 2002, the National Association for Urban Debate Leagues has served as the national leadership organization for the urban debate movement. Today, nineteen urban debate leagues provide competitive policy debate programs to high school and middle school students across the United States, in school districts where 87% of students are minority and 78% are low income.
Urban Debate
The National Association for Urban Debate Leagues is committed to urban debate because it works. It works where other solutions have failed – in schools plagued with low test scores and high dropout rates. By giving minority students from low-income families the tools they need to succeed, urban debate literally changes lives.
- Urban debate improves secondary literacy, academic performance, and high school graduation rates.
- Debate prepares urban students for college by helping them achieve ACT college-readiness benchmarks in reading, English, math and science.
- Debate prepares urban youth for twenty-first century careers by helping them master important skills: critical thinking and problem solving; communication; collaboration; and creativity and innovation.
- Debate prepares urban students for community engagement by instilling a life-long interest in speaking out on issues that affect their communities.
