Recapping the 2009 Chase Urban Debate National Championship
The NAUDL is proud to have hosted the best of urban debate during the second annual Chase Urban Debate National Championship in Chicago on the weekend of April 23-26, 2009. The tournament, held at the downtown campus of Northwestern University, featured the top two teams from each of 19 cities, representing some of the top urban debaters in the nation. Thanks to the generous support of the JPMorgan Chase Foundation, 76 debaters and nearly 60 of their coaches and administrators met in Chicago to compete, learn from each other, and celebrate their achievements.
After six preliminary debates and four single-elimination rounds, Halle Apy and Jeremiah Pickert from Walter Payton College Prep in Chicago won the Final Round and were crowned the 2009 Chase Urban Debate National Champions. Cole Austin of Garfield High School in Seattle was the tournament's Top Speaker, or best individual performer. And St. Louis urban debaters Lorri Leong and Kayla Massey of Central Visual and Performing Arts High School won the First Year UDL Breakout division for new Urban Debate Leagues.
Teams from the following UDLs participated in the Championship: Atlanta, Baltimore, the Bay Area, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, DEBATE-Kansas City, Denver, Detroit, District of Columbia, Houston, Jersey, Los Angeles, Memphis, Milwaukee, Minnesota, Northwest, Rhode Island, and St. Louis.
In addition to the competition, participants learned and shared new ideas through conferencing and professional development sessions led by the top minds in high school and college debate, explored cultural opportunities in the city of Chicago, and connected with over 300 guests at the 2009 National Association for Urban Debate Leagues (NAUDL) Annual Dinner.
The weekend was highly memorable for all who attended, and sets the stage for a wonderful year in urban debate across the country.
